Michael Fortenberry enlisted in the military right after high school, leading him to move from Texas to Alaska. Following his service, Michael got a job at an oil field in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. But it was not long until he returned to Texas for a visit. That was when he met his wife, Juany.
Soon after the couple married, Michael began commuting between Alaska and Texas. He even invested in some property in Littlefield during his off time. When he found out those rentals needed new roofs, an uncle referred him to Trellis Summers. The initial conversation sparked a friendship, one that had Michael spending his off days working roofing jobs on the side for the next two years.
Michael saw that he was missing too much at home during his time away. He relied on his faith to help him figure out what to do next. In 1995, he took a retirement package from the oil fields and invested the money into the roofing company he was working for, renaming it to Fortenberry Roofing.
"I want to emphasize one thing. I want people to know that this company is not mine." said Michael in an interview with The Compass Magazine for an article titled, "Divine Intervention, A Strong Team & Hard Work Help Fortenberry Roofing Find Success," by Bob Houchin. "This is a Christian-based company, 100 percent. God has always provided for us," Michael stopped for a moment and said with a smile, "except for when I've gotten in His way."
When Michael isn't working, he likes to spend time with his wife in the mountains, hiking, cross country skiing, hunting, golfing, and training horses.
